Proving My Faith in Modern Engineering.
August 27, 2003, 09:08 pmI've been meaning to write about this for two weeks. Sorry!
Cort is a client that we've been working with for about 8 months, whom we've never met because he lives in Mobile, AL. He drove up to Louisville this past week for multiple reasons, including to pick up his new production web server that I built for him and also to take the development team to King's Island.
I hadn't been to King's Island since I was in the eighth grade when I went on a band trip. The last time I'd been to an amusement park was when I was either a freshman or sophomore in high school and I went to Kentucky Kingdom with my best friend Davis. I've never been into riding roller coasters. In fact, I'm definitely a wuss about them. But Monday, I was determined to prove my faith in modern engineering.
We drove up to Cincy in Cort's car: Cort, Chase, Jesse, JB, and me. Chase and Cort were roommates in college and the two are world-class haters. They were slamming each other non-stop!
We got to King's Island about 10:30 and the first thing we did was ride Son of the Beast, which is wooden (except for its metal loop). Jesse and I rode together in a middle car. It was pretty damn scary, pretty rough, but I had fun.
Then, we rode the Drop Zone, which is like the Hellavater: goes straight
up, hesitates for a couple seconds, and drops straight down. The line was
surprisingly long and the ride was surprisingly scarier than I'd thought.
I expected it to just fall at a natural rate, but due to the weight of all
the people and the metal ring that we were all attached to, it sank very
fast and pulls you down. I screamed, Holy fuck!
really loud, and
I'm pretty sure there were kids sitting next to us a few seats away.
After that, we rode the Racers. Jesse and I rode in the forward-looking Racer because it had a much shorter line. It was pretty tame, but fun.
Then we ate. JB, Chase, and Cort ate Skyline Chili; what the hell were they thinking?
Immediately after eating, they rode the Vortex, but I didn't want to get sick, so I passed. We rode the Beast after that, which is my Dad's favorite roller coaster. It was fun and long, but really beat the shit out of me. And I wasn't really into the whole screaming-loud-tunnels thing.
The rest of the day, I sat out the rides. I didn't feel well and was really tired.
I'm glad I went and I had a good time, but it really wore me out.
