My Career: the Story So Far
March 19, 2003, 04:03 pmI made a decision the summer after my freshman year at UK to go to school at UofL in the CBPA. My thinking was that if I continued to persue an engineering degree, I would possibly struggle through school, get poor grades, spend a lot of time on my schoolwork, and not have the opportunity to get real experience before I graduated. I hoped that by persuing an easier degree (CIS is much easier than CS!), I would have more time to get a real job (in addition to actually enjoying the past four years!).
I definitely feel that I made the right decision now. I mean, I've learned so much about so many things from my work experience, where my formal education has only briefly discussed certain topics or has ignored. I was just realizing today that – in addition to all the stuff I know about software development (php, python, sql, cvs, etc.) – I've also learned a great deal of system administration for both Windows and Unix environments. While I would hate to have to work as a sysadmin (especially with Windows), at least I know enough to be really productive.
Plus, I'm learning new stuff all the time. The recent stuff I've been doing for ahd.com involves setting up SSL certificates and Apache 2.0 and cert signing and whatnot. Pretty interesting stuff. And I'm learning more and more about DNS all the time.
