murmurs of earth
March 04, 2002, 10:24 pmWow. Okay, I was being a good boy and doing my homework, but then I decided to take a break and read slashdot and I found this page about the Voyager Project. And I was reading these neat-o facts when I found the coolest thing (that used to be) on Earth!
Both Voyager 1 and 2 have 12-inch, gold-plated copper records that contain audio and images (in analog!). The audio includes a bunch of little sound effect samples, like chimpanzees, trains, Earth noises, as well as greetings in 55 languages (including Sumerian and Aramaic) ... and of course, it includes music.
Which brings us to... the rock and the roll: Chuck fuckin' Berry is going to be the first guy to rockout Johnny B. Goode outside the solar system... Mindblowing.
When I read the titles of the sounds, I can't help but think they sound like poem titles of angsty teenagers:
- music of the spheres
- wind, rain, surf
- kiss, mother and child
- mud pots
- footsteps, heartbeat, laughter
There's also a message from Kurt Waldheim, Secretary General, United Nations, where he says, "We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate." Wow. Whoever wrote that line deserves some special award or something.
Man, I'm a nerd, and this entry is so not well organized, but I don't care. I'm excited...
