Mozilla Advocacy.

Since we got new computers, Jesse has switched his main desktop to use Windows XP. He hates Microsoft Outlook (who can blame him) and was getting frustrated with finding “an email client that sucks less” (to quote mutt's homepage). I suggested that he try Mozilla Thunderbird.

Mozilla Thunderbird only recently came out with a 0.1 release, so I wasn't sure it would be sufficient for Jesse's needs. But he installed it and loves it! I'd never used it before, so I wasn't familiar with it, but it is so similar to every other mail client and the UIs are configurable just like Mozilla Firebird. I'm really impressed.

After Jesse got Mozilla Thunderbird and loved how it was simple and worked well, he wanted to install Mozilla Firebird. A simple download and zip extraction and he was finished.

I started to suggest that he remove the Search bar – because I always do – but I've read that people really like it, so I suggested that he try it out. I re-added the Search bar to my Firebird UI and have been using it. I like it. It's handy. I was about to say that the only thing I don't like about it is that I couldn't open the search results in a new tab, but I read a list of keyboard shortcuts and found that Alt+Enter will open the results in a new tab.

I love Mozilla Firebird!

P.S. I was originally going to title this entry “Mozilla Evangelism” in reference to the Mozilla Evangelism Project. But then I looked up evangelism at webster and don't like the sound of their definition: militant or crusading zeal.

I think advocacy (to plead in favor of) sounds friendlier.
