February 16, 2006, 05:30 pmAbout three years ago (very odd!), I wrote a very simple web application to import bank transactions and categorize them so I could see what I was spending my money on.
I imported 2005's data (minus January, because I couldn't export that far back... oh, well) and January of 2006. It's such an eye opener!
I won't tell you how much I spent on music instruments/gear because it's too crazy, but here are a few interesting statistics:
| Description | 2002 | 2005 | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Transactions | Avg Amount | Total Amount | Transactions | Avg Amount | Total Amount | |
| Gas | 76 | $10.56 | $802.72 | 37 | $19.59 | $724.69 |
| Restaurant | 142 | $7.94 | $1126.89 | 240 | $7.34 | $1761.48 |
The gas is pretty interesting. I think the reason for the huge decrease in transactions is due to having a newer, more fuel efficient car and also not driving to E'town all the time. Haha.
I know my parents also keep track of how much they spend in gas and it would be interesting to know how much my dad spends in gas a year (since he commutes to Lousville from E'town every weekday!!).
