irc escapades

July 19, 2001, 01:53 pm Call it a waste of resources. Call it immature. I call it funny. Yesterday, I got g-lined from irc.superlink.net for the first (I think?) time. Here's why:

On irc.superlink.net, they have a channel called #clones. It's invite only. Only opers are allowed on. :( But two days ago, the bot that owns the channel and keeps it up hoarked a violent death. It was open for the taking.

So some adventurous fellow Pootie_Tang registered (thus owning) #clones. Now he could invite anyone he wanted. Like jerkface. And jerkface invited me. Yay!

#clones is a special channel, so it has special privileges like a banlist of unlimited size (compared to the 100 entry cap on normal channels). So someone (maybe jerkface) got the great idea of having a lot of people do nothing but add entries to the banlist.

Jerkface also had the idea of making a client alias so that we could just type /a and it would add a new banlist entry (with multiple random numbers to keep dupes away). Then we had our clients run "/a" every five seconds or so.

Well, the banlist got really huge really fast. With four or so people doing this we were addnig around 2880 bans per hour. After a day and a half of this, the banlist got so huge that people couldn't join the channel (their irc client would try to download the banlist when joining and would die from flooding or buffer overflow or something). Freakin' hilarious.

But then around 5:30 or so yesterday, an oper got on and figured out what was going on and g-lined us all. :( Oh well. It was fun while it lasted. :)

I love the Dreamcast. Two days ago I bought Hydro Thunder for $9.99. I'm not that big on racing games, but this is pretty fun and the graphics are pleasing. And today I played hydro thunder (for $.75 per play!) at Mr. Gatti's and 0wn3d!!

I also brought the Dreamcast to work today for a little dog 'n' pony show. I'm a good, little Dreamcast advocate. :)
