I'm Finally Finished with Quicksilver.
October 27, 2003, 04:43 pmI finally finished the remaining 100 pages of Quicksilver last night. It is probably my least favorite Neal Stephenson book. Seriously.
I don't think it's possible for me to care less about every detail of the streets in every European city or the entire family tree of some ancillary character or detailed descriptions of French fashion in the mid-1600's.
Cryptonomicon was about the same in length, yet had 900+ pages of story, instead of maybe 400 pages of story with 500 pages of verbose, unimportant details. And the details aren't even about cool things.
And I really think Neal Stephenson needs to get off the whole I think vortices are the coolest thing in the world and I'm so cool, I can make up an island and language (Qwghlm) and then write multiple books about them shit.
Considering I like his other books so much more, it's a shame I don't much care for this one. I've read other reviews that compared this to that piece of shit The Difference Engine that William Gibson and Bruce Sterling wrote. I couldn't read past 45 pages of that crapheap.
But of course, whenever volumes 2 and 3 of the Baroque Cycle are released, I'm sure I'll read them.
I am Neal Stephenson's slave.
