i am the “knowledge catalyst”!!
May 10, 2001, 01:48 pmJeez... I had a shaky day at work yesterday...
Last week, my co-worker Chris was on vacation, so I took care of some of her work, including sending out spam (they call them “tips&rdqou;). So I was setting up the tips, filling the templates with the sponsor copy and with the actual tip copy, when I realized, “Oh crap; there aren't any Windows ME tips in the database.”
So I decided to just wing it and write my own tip.
Well, the client's editors and whatnot that normally take care of such things didn't like this breach in the command hierarchy. So they started emailing Chris saying, “Where the hell did this Windows ME tip come from? It's not in the database!!” And Chris asked me, “Hey, remember when you did tips last week? Was there anything weird about the Windows ME tip that went out?”
“Yeah, I remember. There weren't any tips in the database, so I kinda wrote my own.”
<Head shaking...>
And I was thinking, “Oh shit! Kurt is going to be pissed! Or if he's not pissed, he'll have to deal with the client's shit and it'll be my fault!”
So I told Kurt and he called the client. And when Kurt told the client, “There weren't any tips, so he just made one up.”, they replied, “Oh, how clever!”
I am so incredibly relieved that they weren't pissed. In fact, they started joking around with Kurt about it and he was encouraging the light-heartedness by saying things like, “Yeah, you can't beat free copy!”
So here it is, my first “published” technical goodness (for your amusement):
Executing Programs from the Address Bar
In Windows ME, one can execute programs from the address bar. Simply type in the full path and executable name in the bar and press enter. For example, you could type:
c:\windows\sol.exe
to start up a quick game of solitaire.
It's just another benefit of having the browser integrated with the operating system.
